Choosing the right underwear fit is as important as choosing the right fit for any piece of clothing. Scratch that - it’s more important. The reality is that an ill-fitting pair of underwear can not only look unattractive but can also lead to discomfort, chafing, and itching. But finding the perfect pair of underwear is no easy task, as it’s about more than the pick. It’s also about the fabric and style. Keep reading for a few of our top tips for finding the perfect underwear fit.

Choose the underwear style wisely

The underwear style you choose matters. There are so many styles out there now and each one offers different levels of coverage. They can also hit your waist and groin or legs in different places. For this reason, you need to choose a style that you’re comfortable with. If you’re used to minimal coverage, then a thong or jockstrap style might be your best bet. However, if you want something more supportive, look for a boxer, trunk, or boxer brief underwear. Briefs are another option that can be a good middle ground between minimalist and maximalist styles.
For a well-rounded underwear drawer, we recommend choosing a range of styles to suit different outfits and activities. Boxers and briefs are great for everyday wear, whereas you may want thongs and jockstraps for nights out or trucks for the gym.

Make sure you find the correct waistband fit

Our second tip is to select underwear with the right waistband fit. There is nothing worse than a waistband that digs into your skin the whole time you’re wearing them. The perfect waistband should lay flat against your skin. It shouldn’t squeeze your waist or leave a mark later, but it also shouldn’t be loose. If it’s too loose, it can rise up throughout the day and look bulky. On the other hand, if it’s too tight it can cause irritation and even a rash.

Find leg openings that fit snugly

The leg openings on your chosen underwear should fit snugly around your legs but should still be comfortable. If the leg openings are too loose, your underwear might start to rise up, resulting in a dreaded wedgie. On the other hand, if they’re too tight, it can be extremely uncomfortable. When you try on underwear, make sure that you sit and stand in it to ensure neither position is too constricting in the leg.

Pick an appropriate size pouch

One of the most overlooked elements of the perfect underwear fit is the pouch. Not all pouches are the same, just like how each man’s package is unique. The key is to find a pouch that is the appropriate size for your groin. There should be enough space that the pouch is breathable but it should also be snug enough that it keeps everything in place and provides sufficient support. Remember that not all underwear fabrics fit the same

Last but not least, keep in mind that not all underwear fabrics fit the same. This means that just because you’re a size large in a pair of cotton trunks doesn’t mean that you’ll be the same size in a lacy thong. Some fabrics are more prone to stretching, while others can actually shrink - especially if you opt to wash them in the dryer. Speaking of which, to ensure your perfect-fitting pair of underwear remains that way, try to air dry whenever possible.
