We were all waiting for wireless headphones for, let’s say a couple decades. Once we got them, we realized that adapters needed to be carried around and they were only available for the most part with over-the-ear devices.

Some companies like SMS Audio (the 50 cent-backed brand) offers fine wireless products, but again, not as portable as you may think.

Enter the Apple AirPods, a completely wireless set of headphones that also act microphones, allowing for voice-activated commands with Siri, and all that comes with connecting to your iPhone/iPod/Apple Watch/Everything.

The AirPods come with a few distinct advantages over other headphones as well as some previously unheard of features. First, in an effort to save battery life as well as prevent missing out on any audio/content, the AirPods use infrared technology to detect when they are actually in your ears. To save you all the jargon, basically they won’t play any audio unless in your ears.

Secondly, they use vibration-sensing technology to help pick-up your voice, differentiating it from the noises around you. This means you can use Siri for voice commands (as mentioned above) to comb through your playlist or make phone calls.

Another handy mechanism is the compact, wireless charging case, which holds over 24 hours worth of juice for your AirPods which themselves can be used for around five hours. So you have nearly five separate charges to go through so long as you have your case on you. The same wireless case also provides wireless, intelligent connection to your devices, which means you can switch between your Apple products seamlessly without any annoying set-up.

The application of the AirPods is pretty evident; high quality headphones that you can use wherever you go, which also act as your ear bud for answering calls or using Siri.

While I’m not going to immediately recommend them for drenched-in-sweat workout, if you’re a business person or some one who uses a lot of Apple devices then these are definitely for you.

Imagine you’re at home or school; you can simply walk around listening to your music, take calls, have Siri read your texts, or with a double-tap of the AirPod, make all the normal commands you usually would, all without having to reach in your pocket. Pretty cool.

For those who have a problem with the design, I would ask, have you seen Bluetooth devices that look like you are the Star Trek Enterprise taking calls from Captain Picard? I’ll gladly take the AirPods, thanks.

Release Date

Originally set for October, the release of the AirPods has been pushed to just before the new year, or slightly after if according to this article if you live in the UK.
