Let’s all take a minute to pray to whatever deity you wish that trends like Sweatin’ to the Oldies and Buns of Steel do not make a return in 2017.

While we may never fully rid ourselves of home workout VHS tapes (thank you 3 a.m. infomercials) we can at least do our best to keep an eye for future fitness trends.

unnamed

Use this list to stay ahead of the crowd before it all becomes a fad that everyone and their mother are posting on Facebook. Look out for these trends to make an appearance at a gym near you in 2017.

Wearable Tech

We’ve already told you what the Apple Watch Series 2 means for fitness enthusiasts, and as more people buy Fitbits, Apple Watches and the like, wearable tech apps will explode in popularity.

Prepare for friends, cousins and grandma to be in competition with you to find out who can run the fastest to the grocery (liquor) store.

Let’s not forget things like virtual reality. Playstation and Xbox will surely have VR games related to fitness using products like Oculus, just as the Nintendo Wii famously did.

Dance, Dance and more Dance

Besides embarrassing one’s self, dancing is actually great cardio activity. From Zumba to ballroom dance, all kinds of dance are being promoted.

We saw a huge spike in Latin dance after the World Cup & Olympics opened our hearts to Brazilian culture and it’s not going to stop people.

It can be fun though, just like at the gym, working out to your favourite music combined with dancing will have you sweatin’ to the oldies—I mean, sweating, just sweating that’s it.

Live-Streamed Classes

In 2017 gyms will become obsolete and people will leave their homes even less and that’s when the robot revolution happens (haven’t you seen Terminator 2?!).

But actually, it’s a pretty good idea. Unlike live-streamed university classes where you’re more likely to study a bag of Doritos as opposed to biology, following along in your home seems way easier especially if you feel a little embarrassed or, maybe there’s a snow storm and getting to the gym is not an option.

It’s a bit of a surprise this hasn’t happened already, so look out for it in 2017. While you’re live streaming, hop over to the swimwear section and capitalize on winter prices.

Combined Workouts

No, we don’t mean sitting AND standing, we mean along the lines of something called PHIIT, which means Pilates High Intensity Interval Training. Everyone on the web is pointing towards this being the top fitness trend of the new year.

Why? Because separately they are two of the most popular routines out there combining toning and core strengthening.

Another type is Peripheral Heart Action Training (PHA) which is basically a workout routine on drugs. Combine a workout of a particular muscle group with that of other groups to allow the other to recover while keeping your heart rate up. Complete four or five rounds of five exercises then collapse on the floor like a Nestea plunge.

These are trends everyone is talking about for 2017, be the cool kid in school and tell them Male Basics told you first!
